The Beginning
On 1st August this year, The Pamper Shed turns six years old.
Six years.
Sometimes that feels impossible to say out loud.
The Pamper Shed was born during one of the biggest periods of uncertainty in my life.
At the time, Rob and I were going through the adoption process and dreaming about the day we would finally become parents. At the same time, I found myself facing redundancy during the Covid pandemic.
Like many people, I suddenly found myself asking a lot of questions about the future.
What would work look like?
How would I balance family life?
What would allow me to be present for the moments that mattered most?
I knew that once we were lucky enough to welcome a little one into our family, I wanted a career that could work around family life rather than constantly competing with it.
So, with equal parts excitement and sheer terror, I decided to open The Pamper Shed.
If I’m honest, I wasn’t entirely convinced it would work.
I gave myself three months.
Three months to see if I could build something sustainable.
Three months to see if people would actually book.
Three months to see if I could turn a dream into a business.
What happened next completely exceeded anything I could have imagined.
Not only did it work, but six years later I find myself running a business I genuinely love, supporting wonderful clients, doing work that feels meaningful and, most importantly, having the flexibility to build a life around my family.
When I look back at those early days, I realise I wasn’t just building a salon.
I was building the future I hoped my family would have.

Emma, owner of The Pamper Shed in Bridgwater, Somerset, six years after opening her salon doors.
Six years later, I’m not the same woman who opened those doors.
I’ve grown in ways I never expected.
I’ve become a mum.
I’ve navigated redundancy, lockdowns, adoption, perimenopause, family challenges and the everyday ups and downs that come with building a life and a business at the same time.
And somehow, through all of it, The Pamper Shed has grown alongside me.
Looking Back
Looking back at photos of my original treatment room makes me smile. At the time I was incredibly proud of it, and rightly so. It represented a dream I had worked hard to bring to life.
What I didn’t realise then was that I wasn’t just building a beauty business.
I was building a community.
What started as a small treatment room with a second-hand chair, a nail desk by the window and a dream bigger than the space itself has evolved through countless little improvements, late-night decorating projects, furniture rearrangements and moments of “what if I moved this here?”
Each version of The Pamper Shed tells part of the story.
The opening day set-up reminds me of the excitement, nerves and determination of taking that first leap into self-employment. I had no idea what the future would hold, only that I wanted to create a space where people felt welcome, comfortable and cared for.
As the years passed, the room evolved alongside me. New flooring, new furniture, new treatments and a growing confidence in the business I was building. What began as a beauty room gradually became something much more intentional.
Then came the biggest transformation of all. Not just a new look, but a new direction. A calmer, more considered space designed around the experience I wanted every client to have from the moment they walked through the door.
When I look at The Pamper Shed today, I don’t just see wallpaper, treatment beds and shelves of products. I see six years of hard work, hundreds of wonderful clients, laughter, tears, lockdowns, adoption paperwork, menopause, family challenges and moments when giving up would have been easier.
The Pamper Shed has evolved because I have evolved.
And while I don’t know exactly what the next chapter will look like, one thing remains unchanged: creating a space where people can pause, breathe and feel looked after will always be at the heart of everything I do.

The Evolution of The Pamper Shed
From opening day in 2020 to The Pamper Shed today. Every change tells part of the story.
The Treatments Were Never Really The Point
Over the years I’ve offered all sorts of treatments.
- Nails.
- Massage.
- Facials.
- Waxing.
- Brows.
- Pedicures.
- Skincare.
And whilst those treatments are still at the heart of what I do, I’ve realised they’re often just the reason people walk through the door.
The real magic happens in the conversations.
Over the last six years I’ve celebrated weddings, engagements, new jobs, new homes and new babies with my clients.
I’ve listened to holiday plans, retirement dreams and exciting new adventures.
I’ve watched confidence grow.
I’ve seen people begin to prioritise themselves after years of putting everyone else first.
But I’ve also been trusted during some incredibly difficult moments.
Grief
Loss
Illness
Mental health
Family issues
Anxiety
The kind of conversations that remind you how much people are carrying behind the smile they show the world.
It’s a privilege I never take for granted.
The Lessons I Didn’t Expect To Learn
When I started my business, I thought success meant being busy.
Filling every appointment slot.
Working longer hours.
Saying yes to everything.
Trying to do all the things for all the people.
What I’ve learned is that being busy and being fulfilled are not the same thing.
Over the years I’ve learned the importance of boundaries.
The importance of protecting my time.
The importance of protecting my family.
And perhaps most importantly, the importance of protecting my own wellbeing.
You cannot pour from an empty cup.
Trust me, I’ve tried.
Life Happens To All Of Us
Whilst supporting others through their journeys, life has been happening behind the scenes for me too.
I’ve navigated the challenges of running a business through Covid.
I’ve become a mum to the little girl we spent so long hoping and waiting for.
I’ve experienced the joys, chaos and challenges that come with family life.
I’ve battled perimenopause and all the fun that comes with it.
I’ve had moments where I’ve felt completely overwhelmed.
Moments where I’ve questioned myself.
Moments where I’ve wondered how I was going to juggle all the plates spinning around me.
And more recently, I’ve been navigating one of the most stressful periods of my life as my family works through an ongoing legal dispute surrounding our home.
There have been days when showing up has felt harder than others.
Days where I’ve felt exhausted emotionally and mentally.
Days where I’ve questioned whether I was doing enough.
But there has always been one constant.
The Pamper Shed.
And the people who walk through its door.
Why Things Are Changing
If you’ve followed me recently, you’ll have noticed some changes.
A brand new website.
Monday Skin Clinic.
New salon hours.
A stronger focus on skin health and wellbeing.
These changes aren’t about doing less.
They’re about doing what matters most.
As I’ve grown, I’ve become clearer about the experience I want to create.
I want The Pamper Shed to be more than somewhere you come for a treatment.
I want it to be somewhere you can exhale.
A space where you’re not expected to be productive.
A space where nobody needs anything from you.
A space where you can laugh, cry, vent, celebrate, reflect or simply enjoy an hour of peace and quiet.
Because life is busy.
Life is messy.
Life can be wonderful and difficult all at the same time.
Sometimes we all need somewhere to pause.
Looking Ahead
Six years in, I feel more excited about the future than ever.
Not because everything is perfect.
Far from it.
But because I finally understand what The Pamper Shed is really about.
It’s about connection.
It’s about kindness.
It’s about helping people feel cared for.
It’s about creating a calm space in a world that often feels anything but calm.
And if you’ve ever booked an appointment, supported my business, recommended me to a friend, shared a conversation, trusted me with your story or simply cheered me on from afar, thank you.
You have helped shape The Pamper Shed into what it is today.
If you’ve recently discovered The Pamper Shed and would like to learn more about the treatments, skin consultations and wellbeing-focused services I offer, you can visit my website at www.thepampershed.net.
Whether you’ve been with me since day one or you’re considering your first visit, I’d love to welcome you.
Here’s to the next chapter. Whatever that chapter looks like, I’m incredibly grateful you’re part of the story.
